What I look for in a web hosting provider

When I first started my internet presence and my first website I had the bad luck to take the advice of a friend and choose his hosting provider which was a reseller located in my country. That should have triggered the alarm and my reserves towards doing business here but, as I was a noob, I went along.

After a painful year of downtimes and ppor support I finally started to get some experience and found out the hard way what I needed to look for in my ideal hosting provider.

I made up a list and if this is what you need to I suggest you read along. This is what I need from my webhosting provider :

Have cPanel enabled to make it all easier :
When I upload a site I place a zip and extract it with cPanel file manager. I hate telnet unzip and the likes. It's cPanel for me or another web hosting service.
Allow PHP with some extensions :
I need PHP and several extensions enabled. GD2 is vital, sockets and curl enabled. And so on...
Allow unlimited mySql databases and remote access :
Unlimited number of mySql databases is vital if you want to structure your data at it's best. Each database can be site related hence provide you better debugging access. I also need to unlock some IPs to access my database remotely with dedicated software.
Host unlimited numbers of domains and subdomains :
Most providers trick you. You host the first domain which is usualy hosted for free and afterwards they charge you for each new domain. And if you can't read their feature list between the lines you'll realize you have to pay 10-20$ for any domain not registered through them.
Allow unlimited subdomains :
I need to enable any subdomain to work on a domain I host. So if someone types in a subdomain instead of www in front of my hosted domain name I need to be able to use .htaccess to handle that.
Allow me to configure .htaccess for my needs :
I extensively use .htaccess to configure my hosted sites. It is vital nowadays to have .htaccess available to configure at your own will.
... and other smaller less important ordinary features everyone has.

The best hosting provider I have come across

So after my bad hosting experiences I ended up using them. I read reviews, did the homework, I wanted to make sure I make the best choice in webhosting.

I found HostGator.com. They offered mySql, PHP and cPanel, and unlimited domains, subdomains and mySql databases. This was just too good to be true in webhosting. So I started lookig for the catch. There had to be a hidden something in their hosting offer that I missed. Found nothing, so I signed up for an account.

3 years later I am still sure this was the best choice in hosting solutions I could make. They work well for both regular webhosting and ecommerce hosting, bandwidth is more then enough. They have an excellent up-time and all I had to deal with support was some features I needed but no problems during time. So with them PHP hosting and mySql webhosting is at its best and I strongly encourage you to give them a try.

Do not forget to use their online live help for any questions you might have. They hosting billing system is also excellent and if you put your credit card data on file you'll never have to worry about your webiste's hosting.

The reseller hosting is great too and they now offer different C class IP-s for extensive use in SEO. This is a great feature, way too expensive or just unavalable with other web hsoting companies.

So, I consider them top hosting and pretty soon I'll switch my shared hosting account to a dedicated hosting account so I'll have everything placed together.
