The best security measure: Microsoft Style!

Remember the TCP/IP limitation post where I explained how Microsoft decided to limit the worm spread by limiting number of half open connection. Well, this policy…

Kill'em all, let God sort'em out!

… has been addopted by Wordpress that decided to block XMLRPC by default in Wordpress 2.6. This is not such a big deal but you'll have to actually enable it. It will be just a tiny little more work for mass installs and so on but I really don't care about the implications of this measure. I don't use it ;)

What actually shocks me is the way they tighten up security: By restricting rights!

Way to go Wordpress! Microsoft style.

This is going to end up causing folks many headaches. Think about how many people use scribefire or some other software/browser based poster....

Option should probably be default on - but hey not a huge deal if they make the change public and it gets indexed so folks can find it.

I don't actually use Wordpress but I'm curious how will this affect those who run WP based blog farms and decide to update?
But I don't think they need to worry, just keep a copy of WP2.5 safe :)

It will mildly irritate me if they turn it off on wordpress hosted blogs, which by the sounds of it they will, an irritating move but I can see from there side why they would do it, although claiming it is just for security reasons is a load of spin if you ask me.

there's only one reason they would turn it off by default, and therefore on wordpress.com... but where there's a will there's a way ;)

It's very easy to remotely login into WP and ... turn it on ... automagically :)
I really don't get it why they do it as this will only cause problems to 'amateurs' that use software to post to their real blogs.
A feature they took for granted will be something they'll have to figure out. I love this!

maybe that's the point - to get them off software and back onto wordpress.com

inevitably there's a way round it for the capable

Everybody has to be exposed to ads.
PS: Do they even have ads? :)
